1,3-dimethylamylamine, DMAA, Geranium Extract Soon to be Banned

We all expected this to happen. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be coming sooner rather than later. Last Friday, the FDA sent warning letters to 10 companies challenging products containing DMAA, otherwise known as 1,3-dimethylamylamine or geranium extract, for lack of safety evidence. Among the companies listed were USP Labs, makers of Oxyelite Pro and Jack3d, and Nutrex Research, which manufactures Lipo-6 Black and Hemo Rage. There are many other companies not listed that also use this particular ingredient in their products.

USP Labs actually has published studies that show the safety of DMAA. However, the FDA will argue these studies were not done 75 days before their products were marketed, which is required under current law.

The companies listed have 15 days to respond to the FDA with the specific steps they will take to address the issues in the warning letters. As far as what will happen after that, it’s hard to predict. Will all DMAA products have to be taken off store shelves? Will we be able to still sell what we have left in stock? One thing’s for sure – DMAA will eventually be banned. Several companies have already announced they will stop making products with 1,3-dimethylamylamine in them including Labrada Nutrition and AllMax Nutrition. I suggest stocking up on DMAA products because soon they will all be gone.
